In oilfield operations, tubing and casing are both critical OCTG (Oil Country Tubular Goods) products based on seamless steel pipes. Although they follow the same API 5CT / 5B standards, they serve completely different roles in the well structure.

Tubing and Casing: The Main Differences

Tubing is the inner pipe that carries oil and gas from the reservoir to the surface. It runs inside the casing and focuses on sealing performance, corrosion resistance, and smooth fluid delivery. Sizes are relatively small, typically ranging from 2 3/8" to 7".

Casing is the structural pipe fixed in the wellbore to support the well wall, prevent collapse, and isolate formation fluids. It requires higher strength, collapse resistance, and connection stability. Sizes are larger, usually from 5 1/2" up to 13 3/8".

In short:

  • Tubing = transports oil and gas
  • Casing = protects the wellbore

Their thread forms, wall thickness, and strength grades also differ accordingly, but both use similar machining processes.

Can One Production Line Make Both?

Yes, modern flexible OCTG lines can produce both tubing and casing together.

With adjustable feeding systems, steady rests, and CNC threading machines like WESTWU models, the production line can automatically adapt to diameters from φ60.3mm (2 3/8") to φ339.7mm (13 3/8"). Quick-change functions allow the line to switch between tubing and casing programs within minutes, without reinstalling fixtures.

Shared processes such as cutting, chamfering, threading, inspection, and conveying work for both products. By simply switching machining parameters and programs, manufacturers can efficiently produce mixed orders and improve equipment utilization.

Conclusion

Tubing and casing differ in function, size, and strength requirements, but share compatible manufacturing processes. A well-designed, flexible steel pipe processing line — supported by reliable auxiliary equipment and CNC threading machines — can stably produce both tubing and casing on the same line.

This not only saves investment and space but also allows factories to respond quickly to market changes, making mixed production a highly efficient solution for modern OCTG manufacturing.
